As snow returns to Northeast solar sites, solar grazing persists. These sheep make use of the stockpiled forage still accessible beneath the panels, showing that well-managed winter grazing works with thoughtful planning. Photo from Jess Gray, Gray's Lambscaping.

Means and Metrics: The Standard Checklist for Solar Grazing

We are excited to share our newest publication, Means and Metrics: The Standard Checklist for Solar Grazing!

This report offers the first comprehensive guide for understanding the means of successful implementation and the metrics for evaluating solar grazing. This work was completed in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Read more here.

Fact Sheets

Best Practices: Managing Fescue in Solar Grazing Systems

This fact sheet breaks down the unique challenges and opportunities presented by tall fescue. For those grazing livestock on solar sites in or near the Fescue Belt, this resource is a must-read for understanding how targeted management can turn a potential challenge into a grazing asset.

ASGA Fact Sheet: Winter Management Strategies for Solar Grazing Sheep

Created in partnership with American Humane Society, this fact sheet outlines practical winter management strategies for sheep grazing on solar sites as flocks scale to meet growing demand. It highlights extended grazing, cover crop and residue grazing, and bale unrolling as cost-effective, animal-centered approaches.

Meet a member

Where do you live?

San Angelo, Texas

Where do you graze?

We have multiple grazing operations across West and Central Texas encompassing over 45,000 acres.

How long have you been an ASGA member?

I joined ASGA in May of 2024.

Favorite meal to cook?

My wife is the lead chef in our home but my specialty is leg of lamb at Christmas time. It was my kids’ favorite holiday meal when they were little.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

In a private conversation, the Sergeant Major of the Army, SMA Kidd told me, “take less of the credit and more of the responsibility for the outcomes your team creates.” This has served me well in my military career and in my civilian career since.

What’s a skill you are proud of?

I enjoy team building.

Any hidden talents?

I am a hobbyist Jiu Jitsu practitioner.

Favorite ASGA resource?

I really enjoy the live, interactive webinars on Zoom. When I can’t attend live, I voraciously watch the recordings. The shared tools and templates are a tremendous resource I use as well! I just recently took advantage of the one-on-one meeting with Camren Maierle, and it was so good to get his perspective on some things we are working on! The community there is outstanding and Solar Ranch Xperts would not be where it is today without all the members of ASGA who have helped us along the way!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Wisdom. It is the only thing I would ever ask for.

What are you reading and would you recommend it?

I am reading “The Great Arc of the Wild Sheep” by James L. Clark. My company, QC Outdoors, raises and sells many of the breeds of exotic sheep mentioned in the book, so it is of particular interest to me. If you have any interest in the wild sheep species across the world, this is the book for you. I think I am on my third read now, and I learn something new every time.

Do you have a bucket list item you are working on?

Yes! We have a plan for a multi-agricultural-enterprise, Agrivoltaics project here in Texas that will involve at least seven new farmer/ranchers or veteran producers on one solar site. This concept is already working in other regions of the US in various incarnations and scales, but we want to bring it here, to Texas and do it big, as only Texans can. I’m really excited about it!

What are you looking forward to in the upcoming year?

I am so excited to see Solar Ranch Xperts growing this year, and there are even bigger things for our team in 2026. Be on the lookout for those! I was just selected for a fellowship with Project Vanguard, a veterans’ professional organization in renewable energy. I am really excited about the opportunity to develop my leadership skills and knowledge with that team of absolute professionals in our industry! Most of all, I am looking forward to meeting my newest grandchild, who is due any day!

Advice for new ASGA members?

Jump in with both feet! Get involved. Attend the webinars, go through the website, and use the tools the pioneers of agrivoltaics have shared with us there. All of us “newbies” stand on the shoulders of giants. They may be giants, but they have all been where you are and are in the association to help others. I have yet to have a member scoff at my questions or refuse to help me. It’s made our journey so successful, so don’t be afraid to ask. Someone will help you get started. Also, go to the Solar Farm Summit! The professional education you will receive is tremendous and is only overshadowed by the networking opportunity the conference provides. It will supercharge your Agrivoltaics journey! Most importantly, I know you’re a hard worker, every grazier I know is. Just don’t forget to notice how much joy this business brings you. Being outside, with your animals, in nature, making things better for the future, that’s what this is all about. Enjoy it and have some fun with it!

Thank you for reading!

That's all for now - if you would like to get more involved in ASGA, here's how you can do that:

  • For farmers, become an ASGA Member here.
  • For solar industry folks and companies, become a Corporate Member here.
  • If you're an agriculture related business, equipment company or in a related field, we have sponsorship opportunities here.

If you just want to reach out to us and connect, drop us a line at info@solargrazing.org.

Cheers,

Stacie, Kevin, and Alyssa
